Switchgears

Independent third‑party field evaluations for switchgear that assess safety and code compliance to support regulatory approval and AHJ acceptance.

NFPA Global Solutions provides independent third-party field evaluation services for switchgear. Field evaluations are conducted to assess electrical safety, construction, and compliance with applicable electrical codes, referenced standards, and acceptance criteria.

Switchgear consists of electrical power control and protective assemblies used to isolate, protect, and control electrical circuits in commercial, industrial, utility, and infrastructure environments. These assemblies often include circuit breakers, disconnects, protective relays, control wiring, and bus systems. Our evaluations help demonstrate compliance when switchgear is custom built, modified, refurbished, imported, or not listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory, supporting regulatory review and acceptance by Authorities Having Jurisdiction.

Why Switchgear Compliance Matters

Switchgear is subject to strict electrical safety requirements due to its role in fault interruption, system protection, and personnel safety. Assemblies that are custom engineered, modified after manufacturing, refurbished, or installed outside the scope of an original listing often fall outside traditional certification pathways, increasing scrutiny during inspection and approval.

When switchgear lacks acceptable third-party certification, complete documentation, or consistent labeling, Authorities Having Jurisdiction may delay or deny approval. In many cases, equipment cannot be energized or returned to service until compliance concerns are resolved.

Issues identified late in the inspection or commissioning process can result in corrective work, additional testing, extended outages, or project delays. Clear, code-aligned field evaluation data helps reduce uncertainty during regulatory review and supports more predictable acceptance across jurisdictions.

Switchgear Field Evaluation Overview

Switchgear field evaluations are one-time conformity assessments performed on installed equipment to support regulatory review and acceptance by Authorities Having Jurisdiction. Evaluations focus on whether the switchgear conforms to applicable electrical codes, referenced product standards, and recognized field evaluation criteria.

Field evaluations are commonly used when switchgear has not undergone traditional product listing, when modifications have been made after manufacturing, or when refurbishment or installation conditions differ from the original certification scope. These evaluations provide AHJs with independent third-party information to support approval decisions.

These services are typically applied to low- and medium-voltage switchgear intended for permanent installation in industrial facilities, commercial buildings, data centers, infrastructure projects, and institutional occupancies.

Key Capabilities Include:

  • Conformity assessment of switchgear construction, protective devices, control wiring, grounding and bonding, and enclosure integrity relative to applicable codes and standards
  • Evaluation based on installed configuration, available fault current, and intended operating conditions
  • Review of drawings, one-line diagrams, protection schemes, and technical documentation to support regulatory review
  • Documentation to support field evaluation reports, regulatory approval, and acceptance

How Switchgear Field Evaluations Reduce Risk and Support Compliance

Switchgear field evaluations provide Authorities Having Jurisdiction with clear, documented information to support review and acceptance of installed equipment against applicable electrical safety requirements. This supports more consistent and informed approval decisions.

By identifying nonconformities and installation considerations early, field evaluations help limit corrective work, re-inspection, and unplanned outages during commissioning or re-energization. This supports more predictable project timelines and reduces operational disruption.

For manufacturers, electrical contractors, engineers, and owners, field evaluations provide a practical compliance pathway when traditional listing is not feasible. Documented evaluation data supports acceptance across jurisdictions and provides information regarding whether installed switchgear conformed to applicable safety requirements at the time of the evaluation.

What types of switchgear are evaluated?

Field evaluations are commonly performed on custom built, refurbished, imported, modified, or one-of-a-kind switchgear assemblies intended for permanent installation.

When is a field evaluation typically required?

A field evaluation is typically required when switchgear is not listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory, has been modified after manufacture, or when requested by an Authority Having Jurisdiction during inspection.

Does a field evaluation replace factory listing or certification?

No. A field evaluation is a one-time conformity assessment for a specific piece of switchgear and installation. It does not replace factory listing for mass-produced equipment.

Will a field evaluation be accepted by the Authority Having Jurisdiction?

Field evaluations performed by an accredited Field Evaluation Body are commonly accepted by Authorities Having Jurisdiction when conducted to applicable codes, standards, and jurisdictional requirements. However, acceptance is at the discretion of the AHJ and may be subject to additional local requirements. Customers should confirm acceptance criteria with their AHJ prior to engaging field evaluation services.

What is the process for a switchgear field evaluation?

The process typically includes the following steps:

  • Engage a Field Evaluation Body: The customer engages an accredited Field Evaluation Body acceptable to the Authority Having Jurisdiction.
  • Discuss scope and requirements: NFPA Global Solutions works with the customer and, where appropriate, the AHJ to define evaluation scope and applicable requirements.
  • Conduct the evaluation: The field evaluation is performed, and a field evaluation label may be applied if all applicable requirements are met. Identified nonconformities must be addressed before final acceptance.
  • Receive a report: A documented field evaluation report is issued to support regulatory review and AHJ decision making.

Disclaimer: Field evaluations assess equipment against applicable codes, standards, and field evaluation criteria based on conditions observed and information available at the time of the evaluation. A field evaluation does not constitute a guarantee of ongoing safety, performance, or compliance. Equipment condition, maintenance, operating environment, and system modifications after evaluation may affect safety and performance. The field evaluation label indicates that the equipment was evaluated and found to conform to applicable requirements at the time of the evaluation. Ongoing equipment safety is the responsibility of the equipment owner and operator.
