Switchboards

Independent third‑party field evaluations for switchboards that assess safety and code compliance to support regulatory approval and AHJ acceptance.

NFPA Global Solutions provides independent third-party field evaluation services serving the testing, inspection, and certification industry for switchboards. Field evaluations are conducted to assess electrical safety, construction, and compliance with applicable electrical codes, referenced standards, and acceptance criteria.

Switchboards are core electrical power distribution assemblies used in commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities. They typically incorporate main disconnects, overcurrent protection devices, bus assemblies, and metering components. Our evaluations help demonstrate compliance when switchboards are custom built, modified, refurbished, imported, or not listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory, supporting regulatory review and acceptance by Authorities Having Jurisdiction.

Why Switchboard Compliance Matters

Switchboards are subject to strict electrical safety requirements due to their role in distributing power and managing available fault current within a facility. Switchboards that are custom built, modified after manufacturing, or installed outside the scope of an original listing often fall outside traditional certification pathways, increasing scrutiny during inspection and approval.

When switchboards lack acceptable third-party certification, complete documentation, or consistent labeling, Authorities Having Jurisdiction may delay or deny approval. In many cases, equipment cannot be energized until compliance concerns are resolved.

Issues identified late in the inspection or commissioning process can result in corrective work, replacement of components, additional testing, or extended outages. Clear, code-aligned field evaluation data helps reduce uncertainty during regulatory review and supports more predictable acceptance across jurisdictions.

Switchboard Field Evaluation Overview

Switchboard field evaluations are one-time conformity assessments performed on installed switchboards to support regulatory review and acceptance by Authorities Having Jurisdiction. Evaluations focus on whether the switchboard conforms to applicable electrical codes, referenced product standards, and recognized field evaluation criteria.

Field evaluations are commonly used when switchboards have not undergone traditional product listing, when modifications have been made after manufacturing, or when installation conditions differ from the original certification scope. These evaluations provide AHJs with independent third-party information to support approval decisions.

These services are typically applied to switchboards intended for permanent installation in commercial buildings, industrial facilities, infrastructure environments, and institutional occupancies.

Key Capabilities Include:

  • Conformity assessment of switchboard construction, bus configuration, bus bar bracing, grounding and bonding, and protective devices relative to applicable codes and standards
  • Evaluation based on installed configuration, short circuit current rating, available fault current, and intended operating conditions
  • Review of drawings, one-line diagrams, nameplate data, and technical documentation to support regulatory review
  • Documentation to support field evaluation reports, regulatory approval, and acceptance

How Switchboard Field Evaluations Reduce Risk and Support Compliance

Switchboard field evaluations provide Authorities Having Jurisdiction with clear, documented information to support review and acceptance of installed equipment against applicable electrical safety requirements. This supports more consistent and informed approval decisions.

By identifying nonconformities and installation considerations early, field evaluations help limit corrective work, re-inspection, and unplanned downtime during commissioning or re-energization. This supports more predictable project timelines and reduces operational disruption.

For manufacturers, electrical contractors, engineers, and owners, field evaluations provide a practical compliance pathway when traditional listing is not feasible. Documented evaluation data supports acceptance across jurisdictions and provides confidence that installed switchboards meet applicable safety expectations.

What types of switchboards are evaluated?

Field evaluations are commonly performed on custom built, refurbished, imported, modified, or one-of-a-kind switchboards intended for permanent installation.

When is a field evaluation typically required?

A field evaluation is typically required when a switchboard is not listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory, has been modified after manufacture, or when requested by an Authority Having Jurisdiction during inspection.

Does a field evaluation replace UL 891 listing?

No. A field evaluation is a one-time conformity assessment for a specific switchboard and installation. It does not replace factory listing under UL 891 or any other applicable standard for mass-produced equipment.

Will a field evaluation be accepted by the Authority Having Jurisdiction?

Field evaluations performed by an accredited Field Evaluation Body are commonly accepted by Authorities Having Jurisdiction when conducted to applicable codes, standards, and jurisdictional requirements. However, acceptance is at the discretion of the AHJ and may be subject to additional local requirements. Customers should confirm acceptance criteria with their AHJ prior to engaging field evaluation services.

What is the process for a switchboard field evaluation?

The process typically includes the following steps:

  • Engage a Field Evaluation Body: The customer engages an accredited Field Evaluation Body acceptable to the Authority Having Jurisdiction.
  • Discuss scope and requirements: NFPA Global Solutions works with the customer and, where appropriate, the AHJ to define evaluation scope and applicable requirements.
  • Conduct the evaluation: The field evaluation is performed, and a field evaluation label may be applied if all applicable requirements are met. Identified nonconformities must be addressed before final acceptance.
  • Receive a report: A documented field evaluation report is issued to support regulatory review and AHJ decision making.

Disclaimer: Field evaluations assess electrical safety, construction, and compliance of switchboards based on conditions observed and information available at the time of the evaluation. Short circuit current rating (SCCR) and available fault current assessments are based on equipment nameplate data, manufacturer documentation, and fault current information provided by the customer or obtained from utility records. NFPA Global Solutions does not independently calculate or verify available fault current at the point of installation unless specifically engaged to do so.

Why NFPA Global Solutions Switchboard Field Evaluations

Our field evaluation team brings extensive experience evaluating electrical power distribution equipment and understands how switchboards are reviewed within regulated environments and how expectations vary by design, modification history, and Authority Having Jurisdiction.

NFPA Global Solutions is a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Fire Protection Association, and expands upon NFPA’s leadership in fire, electrical, and life safety codes and standards. Our approach emphasizes independent third-party conformity assessment, technical accuracy, and clear documentation that may be used to support regulatory review and acceptance by Authorities Having Jurisdiction.

NFPA Global Solutions operates independently from NFPA's codes and standards development activities. Field evaluations are conducted based on the published requirements of applicable codes and standards, consistent with the processes used by all accredited field evaluation bodies.
