Industrial Control Panels

Independent third‑party field evaluations for industrial control panels that assess safety and code compliance to support regulatory approval and AHJ acceptance.

NFPA Global Solutions provides independent third-party field evaluations for industrial control panels. Field evaluations are conducted to assess electrical safety, construction, and compliance with applicable electrical codes, referenced standards, and acceptance criteria.

Industrial control panels are widely used across manufacturing, processing, infrastructure, and automation applications and often incorporate power distribution, motor control, programmable logic controllers, and safety circuits. Field evaluations assess the electrical construction, wiring methods, and safety-related electrical components within the panel enclosure. Our evaluations help demonstrate compliance when control panels are custom built, modified, imported, or not listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory, supporting regulatory review and acceptance by Authorities Having Jurisdiction.

Why Industrial Control Panel Compliance Matters

Industrial control panels are subject to strict electrical safety requirements due to their role in controlling machinery, processes, and energized equipment. Panels that are custom built, modified after manufacturing, or assembled outside of a listed panel shop often fall outside traditional certification pathways, increasing scrutiny during inspection and approval.

When control panels lack acceptable third-party certification, clear documentation, or consistent labeling, Authorities Having Jurisdiction may delay or deny approval. In many cases, power cannot be energized until compliance concerns are resolved.

Issues identified late in the inspection process can result in corrective rewiring, component replacement, additional testing, or schedule impacts. Clear, code aligned field evaluation data helps reduce uncertainty during regulatory review and supports more predictable acceptance across jurisdictions.

Industrial Control Panel Field Evaluation Overview

Industrial control panel field evaluations are one-time conformity assessments performed on installed panels to support regulatory review and acceptance by Authorities Having Jurisdiction. Evaluations focus on whether the panel conforms to applicable electrical codes, referenced product standards, and field evaluation criteria.

Field evaluations are commonly used when industrial control panels have not undergone traditional product listing, when panels are built for a specific installation, or when modifications or installation conditions differ from the original certification scope. These evaluations provide AHJs with independent third-party information to support approval decisions.

These services are typically applied to industrial control panels intended for permanent installation in manufacturing facilities, industrial plants, infrastructure environments, and commercial or institutional settings.

Key Capabilities Include:

  • Conformity assessment of panel construction, wiring methods, and safety features relative to applicable codes and standards
  • Evaluation based on installed configuration, operating conditions, and intended use
  • Review of drawings, schematics, and technical documentation to support regulatory review
  • Documentation to support field evaluation reports, regulatory approval, and acceptance

How Industrial Control Panel Field Evaluations Reduce Risk and Support Compliance

Industrial control panel field evaluations provide Authorities Having Jurisdiction with clear, documented information to support review and acceptance of installed equipment against applicable electrical safety requirements. This supports more consistent and informed approval decisions.

By identifying nonconformities and installation considerations early, field evaluations help limit corrective work, re-inspection, and unplanned delays during commissioning. This supports more predictable project timelines and reduces operational disruption.

For panel builders, machine manufacturers, integrators, and owners, field evaluations provide a practical compliance pathway when traditional listing is not feasible. Documented evaluation data supports acceptance across jurisdictions and provides confidence that installed panels meet applicable safety expectations.

Note: A field evaluation of an industrial control panel addresses the panel itself and does not constitute an evaluation of the broader machine, system, or process into which the panel is installed.

What types of industrial control panels are evaluated?

Field evaluations are commonly performed on custom built, site assembled, imported, modified, or one of a kind industrial control panels intended for permanent installation.

When is a field evaluation typically required?

A field evaluation is typically required when a control panel is not listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory, has been modified after manufacture, or when requested by an Authority Having Jurisdiction during inspection.

Does a field evaluation replace UL 508A listing?

No. A field evaluation is a one-time conformity assessment for a specific panel and installation. It does not replace a UL 508A panel shop listing or any other factory listing or certification for mass-produced panels.

Will a field evaluation be accepted by the Authority Having Jurisdiction?

Field evaluations performed by an accredited Field Evaluation Body are commonly accepted by Authorities Having Jurisdiction when conducted to applicable codes, standards, and jurisdictional requirements. However, acceptance is at the discretion of the AHJ and may be subject to additional local requirements. Customers should confirm acceptance criteria with their AHJ prior to engaging field evaluation services.

What is the process for a field evaluation?

The process typically includes the following steps:

  • Engage a Field Evaluation Body: The customer engages an accredited Field Evaluation Body, such as NFPA Global Solutions, to provide conformity assessment services acceptable to the Authority Having Jurisdiction.
  • Discuss scope and requirements: NFPA Global Solutions works with the customer and, where appropriate, the AHJ to define evaluation scope and applicable requirements.
  • Conduct the evaluation: The field evaluation is performed, and a field evaluation label may be applied if all applicable requirements are met. Identified non-conformities must be addressed before final acceptance.
  • Receive a report: A documented field evaluation report is issued to support regulatory review and AHJ decision making.

Why NFPA Global Solutions Industrial Control Panel Field Evaluations

Our field evaluation team brings extensive experience evaluating industrial electrical equipment and understands how industrial control panels are reviewed within regulated environments and how expectations vary by panel design, installation, and Authority Having Jurisdiction.

NFPA Global Solutions is a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Fire Protection Association, and expands upon NFPA’s leadership in fire, electrical, and life safety codes and standards. Our approach emphasizes independent third-party conformity assessment, technical accuracy, and clear documentation that may be used to support regulatory review and acceptance by Authorities Having Jurisdiction.

NFPA Global Solutions operates independently from NFPA's codes and standards development activities. Field evaluations are conducted based on the published requirements of applicable codes and standards, consistent with the processes used by all accredited field evaluation bodies.
