Electrical and Industrial Products

Independent third‑party field evaluations for electrical and industrial equipment that assess safety and code compliance to support regulatory approval and AHJ acceptance.

NFPA Global Solutions provides independent third-party field evaluation services serving the testing, inspection, and certification (TIC) industry for electrical and industrial products. Field evaluations are conducted to assess electrical safety, construction, and compliance with applicable electrical codes, referenced standards, and acceptance criteria.

Electrical and industrial products often serve as critical components within manufacturing operations, infrastructure systems, and commercial facilities. Our evaluations help demonstrate compliance when equipment is custom built, modified, or not listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory, supporting regulatory review and acceptance by Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).

Why Electrical and Industrial Product Compliance Matters

Electrical and industrial products are subject to rigorous safety and code requirements, particularly when installed in regulated environments such as manufacturing facilities, commercial buildings, and infrastructure projects. Products that are custom built, modified after manufacturing, or produced in limited quantities often fall outside traditional certification pathways, creating additional scrutiny during inspection and approval.

When required documentation or third-party compliance evidence is incomplete, unclear, or not aligned with how equipment is installed and used, approvals by Authorities Having Jurisdiction can be delayed or denied.

Issues identified during inspection or commissioning can result in corrective modifications, additional testing, restricted operation, or project delays. Clear, code aligned field evaluation data helps reduce uncertainty during regulatory review and supports more consistent acceptance across jurisdictions.

Electrical and Industrial Product Field Evaluation Overview

Electrical and industrial field evaluations are performed as one-time conformity assessments to support code compliance, regulatory review, and acceptance by Authorities Having Jurisdiction. Evaluations assess whether installed equipment conforms to applicable electrical codes, referenced standards, and acceptance criteria based on its intended installation and use.

Manufacturers, equipment owners, and integrators typically engage in field evaluations when equipment has not undergone traditional product certification, has been custom built or modified, or when questions arise during inspection or authority having jurisdiction review.

These services are commonly used for electrical and industrial equipment intended for permanent installation in commercial, industrial, and regulated environments.

Key Capabilities Include:

  • Conformity assessment of electrical construction and safety features relative to applicable codes and standards
  • Evaluation based on intended installation, configuration, and operating conditions
  • Review of technical documentation to support regulatory and AHJ review
  • Documentation to support field evaluation reports, regulatory approval, and acceptance

How Electrical and Industrial Product Field Evaluation Reduces Risk and Supports Compliance

Electrical and industrial field evaluations help reduce regulatory uncertainty by providing documented, third-party evidence of conformity to applicable electrical codes and safety standards. Clear evaluation results support more informed decision making by Authorities Having Jurisdiction and help streamline the approval process.

By identifying non-conformities and installation considerations early, field evaluations help limit corrective work, re-inspection, and unplanned equipment downtime. This supports more predictable project timelines and reduces disruption during commissioning and start up.

For manufacturers, equipment owners, and integrators, field evaluations provide a practical compliance pathway when traditional certification is not feasible. Documented evaluation data helps support consistent acceptance across jurisdictions and provides confidence that installed equipment meets applicable safety expectations.

What types of equipment are evaluated?

Electrical and industrial field evaluations are commonly performed on custom built or modified equipment, industrial machinery, control panels, electrical assemblies, and other equipment intended for permanent installation in commercial, industrial, or regulated environments.

When is a field evaluation typically required?

Field evaluations are typically required when equipment has not undergone traditional product certification, has been modified after manufacture, or when requested by an Authority Having Jurisdiction during inspection or review.

Does a field evaluation replace product certification or listing?

No. A field evaluation is a one-time conformity assessment for a specific piece of equipment and installation. It does not replace full product certification or listing for mass produced products.

Will a field evaluation be accepted by the Authority Having Jurisdiction?

Field evaluations performed by an accredited Field Evaluation Body are commonly accepted by Authorities Having Jurisdiction when conducted to applicable codes, standards, and jurisdictional requirements. However, acceptance is at the discretion of the AHJ and may be subject to additional local requirements. Customers should confirm acceptance criteria with their AHJ prior to engaging field evaluation services.

Are non-conformities identified during the evaluation?

Yes. Any non-conformities identified during the evaluation are documented, so they can be addressed prior to approval or acceptance.

How are field evaluation results documented?

Results are provided in documented field evaluation reports that summarize applicable requirements, observations, and findings to support regulatory review and AHJ decision making.

What is the process for a field evaluation?

The process typically includes the following steps:

  • Engage a Field Evaluation Body: The customer engages an accredited Field Evaluation Body, such as NFPA Global Solutions, to provide conformity assessment services acceptable to the Authority Having Jurisdiction.
  • Discuss scope and requirements: NFPA Global Solutions works with the customer and, where appropriate, the AHJ defines evaluation scope and applicable requirements.
  • Conduct the evaluation: The field evaluation is performed, and a field evaluation label may be applied if all applicable requirements are met. Identified non-conformities must be addressed before final acceptance.
  • Receive a report: A documented field evaluation report is issued to support regulatory review and AHJ decision making.

Disclaimer: Field evaluations assess electrical and industrial equipment against applicable codes and standards based on conditions observed and information available at the time of the evaluation. Evaluation scope and applicable standards are determined on a product-by-product basis. Not all equipment types may fall within NFPA Global Solutions' accreditation scope. Non-conformities observed during the evaluation are documented so they can be addressed prior to approval or acceptance and may not represent all potential issues.
